Katrinus Lomandra

Lomandra longifolia ‘Katrinus’

Give a simple border a flowing rhythm.

A repeated clump of arching green leaves can make a path feel settled into the garden. Katrinus offers that grasslike movement with a fuller, strappy texture. Use it where its leaves can curve naturally into the planting bed and the walking route can stay comfortably clear.

Before you choose: Katrinus and Katrinus Deluxe are different selections. Confirm the nursery label and local performance; keep leaf tips and flower spikes out of seating and walking space.

Size and space

Mature height: 2–3.5 ft. Mature spread: 2–4 ft.

This guide covers the original Katrinus selection. Nursery reports vary from roughly 2–3 ft to 0.8–1 m high and as much as 1.2 m wide. The rounded 2–3.5 × 2–4 ft planning range reserves space for that variation. It does not substitute the size of Katrinus Deluxe or Breeze.

Installed example: 1 ft high × 1 ft wide. This is an illustrative size, not a pot-size or growth-timeline promise.

Sun to part shade · Water while establishing; allow drainage and review watering during dry spells · Evergreen foliage in suitable conditions · small yellow flower spikes

Care: Remove tired leaves and renew selectively; confirm the exact cultivar

Where it works around Pensacola

Start with a well-drained Pensacola bed, then review summer humidity, winter exposure and the nursery’s experience with the exact selection. Australian growing reports help identify the plant but are not a guarantee of performance on a Gulf Coast property. Leave access to inspect and maintain the base.

Where will the leaves land?

Draw the outer leaf spread before drawing the path edge. A small nursery clump can be placed too close to paving if only its root ball is considered.

How much repetition is enough?

Use a clear repeated group with room between the mature clumps, or deliberately plan a continuous mass. Avoid squeezing an extra plant into every remaining gap.

Can someone reach the center?

Leave a maintenance route or reachable edge. Dense foliage can hide old leaves and makes a cramped corner harder to care for.

Is the supplier offering the same plant?

Check the full label before ordering. Similar-looking Lomandra cultivars differ in texture, size and performance; a rendering name alone is not an order specification.

Before it goes on the plan

Is Lomandra a true grass?

No. It is a grasslike perennial grouped here for its landscape role. Its care should follow the exact Lomandra selection rather than a general ornamental-grass schedule.

Is Katrinus the same as Katrinus Deluxe?

No. Deluxe is a separate selection. Keep its nursery information separate, and revise the design if the supplier proposes a substitute.

Can it be planted right beside a play or seating area?

Keep foliage and flower spikes outside contact areas. The breeder specifically notes that Katrinus can have spiky tips or flowers; soft-looking movement does not establish a soft-touch plant.

Pairing ideas

Purple Pixie Loropetalum: In compatible acidic, well-drained part sun, Purple Pixie can supply a lower color layer. Allow its trailing spread and the Lomandra leaves separate room.

Peach Drift Rose: Peach Drift can add seasonal bloom in a sunny bed with compatible drainage. Keep both mature footprints out of the path and give the rose its own care access.
