Original Knock Out Rose

Rosa 'Radrazz'

Bring the color closer to everyday life.

Cherry-red to hot-pink flowers make a sunny garden feel lively through much of the growing season. Put this bushy landscape rose where you can enjoy it from the house or terrace, with open air around it and prickly stems outside the walking space.

Size and space

Mature range: 3–5 ft high × 3–5 ft wide.

The breeder lists an average 3–4 ft high and wide; UF/IFAS describes 3–5 ft for Knock Out roses in Florida and notes larger unpruned growth. The diagram uses 3–5 ft as the practical regional allowance. It is not a guaranteed upper limit.

Compare with a six-foot person: installed example 1.5 ft high by 1.5 ft wide. This example is not a fixed pot size or a growth timeline.

Full sun · at least 6–8 hours · Water to establish and in dry spells · Repeat warm-season flowers

Where it works around Pensacola

The original Radrazz appears among UF/IFAS’s reliable rose selections for North Florida. Sunny, well-drained beds with good air movement are the starting point; disease resistance does not remove the need to check plant health in humid weather.

Will thorny stems stay out of the way?

Allow space between the mature shrub and paths, pool circulation, play areas and chair movement. A rose beside a route should be enjoyed without brushing against it.

Is there enough direct sun?

Check actual sun hours, including shade from the finished pergola or future trees. A bright-looking location is not always sunny enough to support a good rose display.

Can leaves dry and air move?

Give plants breathing room and water the root area when possible. Disease-resistant roses can still develop leaf problems; avoid a crowded pocket trapped between a wall and other shrubs.

Who will maintain its shape?

Agree on seasonal pruning and access before placing a long row. Choose bed depth for the living shrub, not only for the tidy outline immediately after trimming.

Before it goes on the plan

Is this the double-flowered Knock Out?

No. This page covers the original Radrazz, with single, open flowers. Double Knock Out and other family members are separate cultivars; confirm the nursery label for the look you want.

Does disease resistant mean disease free?

No. UF/IFAS notes that this rose can still have leaf-spot and pest problems. Check changes in foliage or growth and seek a local diagnosis instead of assuming every issue is black spot.

Will it look exactly like the bloom image all year?

No. Flowering comes in cycles, and cool weather can change the amount of foliage and bloom. Combine it with evergreen structure so the garden stays coherent between displays.

Pairing ideas

Grey Owl Juniper: Grey Owl adds a wide, lower texture in the sunny part of a well-drained bed. Keep the rose’s canopy from shading it and avoid unnecessary irrigation over the juniper.

Baby Gem Boxwood: Baby Gem offers a rounded evergreen companion in a broad sunny-to-part-shaded border. Allow separate growing room and give the boxwood relief from the harshest reflected afternoon heat.
