Pride of Houston Yaupon Holly

Ilex vomitoria ‘Pride of Houston’

Privacy with room to grow.

A fine-textured evergreen for a generous screen or small-tree accent. Its value is the structure it brings to the whole garden—not just the berries in a seasonal picture.

Size and space

Mature range: 15–20 ft high × 8–12 ft wide.

This is a large-growing yaupon selection. A nursery shrub can eventually become a small tree. Keeping it as a shorter hedge takes continued pruning; choose a true dwarf yaupon when permanent low growth is the goal.

Compare with a six-foot person: installed example 4 ft high by 3 ft wide. This example is not a fixed pot size or a growth timeline.

Sun to part shade · Water to establish; adaptable once rooted · Evergreen · seasonal red berries

Where it works around Pensacola

A strong starting point for Pensacola screening where a large shrub can have real growing room. Native yaupon is well represented locally; this is a named female selection. Assess direct salt exposure separately from an inland garden.

Protect the space beside it

Keep the mature canopy out of pool circulation, gates, windows and overhead services. Start with its full width, then add the access the space needs.

Plan the form before buying

A multi-stem shrub and a trained tree form create different views and maintenance needs. Confirm the nursery form before the design is finalized.

Think beyond the berries

This female selection can bear fruit when compatible male pollen is available. Keep fruit and leaf cleanup away from the places where you want the least upkeep.

Prepare the planting area

Check drainage and water new plants as they establish. A coastal address alone does not establish a plant’s tolerance of an exposed beachfront bed.

Before it goes on the plan

Can I use it as a low hedge?

It can be pruned, but a naturally large plant kept low creates a continuing maintenance commitment. For a lasting low border, compare dwarf yaupon cultivars before buying.

Will every plant have red berries?

Pride of Houston is a female selection. Fruit production depends on pollination and growing conditions; it is not guaranteed by the rendering.

Is this the same as dwarf yaupon?

No. The cultivar name matters. This page describes Pride of Houston, not a dwarf cultivar or every plant sold simply as yaupon holly.

Pairing ideas

Rose Creek Abelia: Consider Rose Creek in a sunny, well-drained bed in front of the holly, outside its eventual canopy.

Vintage Jade Distylium: Vintage Jade can repeat the green structure at a lower level. Give each mature footprint its own space.
