Choosing a sod installer or artificial turf company? First decide what the lawn is for and how it fits the backyard. Play, pets, a quiet open view and an occasional gathering area are different uses. Selecting a surface by appearance or square-foot price alone leaves the larger layout and ownership questions unanswered.

LANDOVA provides independent outdoor-living design and planning before you choose the installation team. We help connect lawn areas with paths, planting, patios and future features. Start with the free Outdoor Project Plan, or explore paid design services. LANDOVA does not install sod or synthetic turf.

An isolated lawn repair or ongoing maintenance task may be a direct call to a qualified provider. A new surface within a backyard renovation benefits from a shared plan. Our first-call guide helps identify which situation you are in.

What the turf specialist brings

A qualified installer evaluates preparation and the proposed surface within its scope. For natural turf, discuss suitable selection, establishment and care. For synthetic turf, discuss the complete product and installation system, not just the sample. Ask the responsible provider to verify suitability for the site and intended use rather than treating either option as universally appropriate.

EPA WaterSense guidance on turfgrass addresses climate-appropriate selection, soil, watering and maintenance. It concerns living turfgrass and should not be presented as an endorsement of synthetic turf.

Where separate quotes can leave gaps

Imagine a new lawn installed before roof drainage and patio elevations are settled. Construction access damages the surface, a revised path changes its edges, and the irrigation quote is based on the earlier area. Each crew may have followed its instructions. This illustrative example shows why the shared layout and sequence matter.

Four connections to resolve before bidding

  1. Use → surface Play, pets and household expectations. What performance matters most?
  2. Ground → turf Preparation, levels and drainage. Who evaluates the conditions beneath the surface?
  3. Turf → surroundings Paths, beds, pool edges and irrigation. Are the boundaries agreed?
  4. Installation → ownership Establishment, cleaning, upkeep and replacement. What work follows installation?

Natural and synthetic turf need different comparison questions

For sod or another natural-turf approach, ask about the proposed grass, site suitability, preparation, delivery, establishment and watering responsibilities. Clarify what is included after installation and what becomes your responsibility.

For artificial turf, ask about the specified product, base preparation, drainage, edges, seams, infill where used, cleaning, surface-temperature considerations and eventual replacement. Obtain product-specific answers and warranty conditions from the supplier and installer. Do not accept “maintenance-free” as a complete description of ownership.

Give bidders the same intended area, use and removal assumptions. Separate alternatives so a different surface or omitted preparation does not quietly replace the baseline. A product price, installed-surface price and fully coordinated landscape proposal may include different work.

The FTC recommends multiple written estimates and reviewing significant differences. Use our equal-scope comparison guide to document included work, exclusions and open questions. LANDOVA does not promise a fixed savings percentage.

For rough numbers before those choices are resolved, read what a contractor quote can and cannot tell you before design.

Questions to ask sod and artificial turf installers

  • Which area, intended use and specified surface define this proposal?
  • How has the proposed option been evaluated for our site and care preferences?
  • What removal, preparation and drainage assumptions are included?
  • Who coordinates adjoining edges, irrigation changes and construction access?
  • What establishment or cleaning instructions and follow-up will we receive?
  • Which warranty conditions, repairs and eventual replacement responsibilities should we expect?

Start with LANDOVA, then choose the right surface and team

LANDOVA can help determine where a lawn adds value and where planting or hardscape might better serve your goals. Some households want a generous play area; others prefer a smaller useful lawn. That is a design conversation, not a blanket recommendation for one material.

Confirm the layout, visualizations and project-definition work included in your paid proposal. Qualified local specialists retain responsibility for product suitability, technical preparation and installation. LANDOVA does not automatically manage construction or provide ongoing lawn care.

The free Outdoor Project Plan gathers your preferences and questions. It is not a completed custom landscape plan, product specification or installation quote.
