Give a spacious landscape a familiar Florida silhouette.
Cabbage Palm is a tall native palm for the parts of a property that can support an elevated crown. It adds a distinctly Florida outline to a broad lawn edge or a larger landscape composition. Include it when the goal is a lasting vertical feature with generous overhead room.
Before you choose: This is a large palm, not a compact accent. Plan for total height, falling fronds and fruit, and future maintenance access. It is susceptible to lethal bronzing disease; a healthy appearance at planting does not guarantee future freedom from disease.
Illustrative planting concept
Size and space
Total mature height: 40–50 ft. Mature frond spread: 10–15 ft.
UF/IFAS references describe 40–50 ft of height; NC State gives a 10–15 ft crown spread. Larger individuals can occur. The diagram shows total plant height from ground to frond tip. Nursery clear-trunk or wood-height measurements are different and must be checked separately.
Installed example: 8 ft high × 6 ft wide. This is an illustrative size, not a pot-size or growth-timeline promise.
Full sun; young plants tolerate some shade · Adaptable soil; establish with consistent moisture and a sound planting plan · Evergreen fan crown · fragrant flowers · dark wildlife fruit
Care: Retain healthy green fronds; plan professional access for larger specimens

Where it works around Pensacola
Use Cabbage Palm in a spacious Pensacola planting where the crown can rise clear of roofs, wires and future structures. A lawn edge can allow the trunk to remain visible while leaving room for lower plants. Large installations require equipment access and an experienced planting crew.
A tall native focal palm
A spacious lawn-edge composition
A vertical feature in a large garden
A native wildlife-supporting upper layer
A larger property entrance with overhead room
Does the full-height palm belong here?
Compare the future palm with the house and open space. Choose a lower species if the tall crown would overwhelm the intended composition.
Can equipment and care reach it?
Plan access before installing a large specimen. Avoid putting permanent features where they would block future inspection or maintenance.
Is the crown being over-pruned?
Retain healthy green fronds. A severely stripped crown is not a substitute for a suitable location or sound storm preparation.
Has local disease risk been discussed?
Ask a qualified nursery or local Extension office about lethal bronzing and current regional palm health. Select healthy stock and keep the wider planting diverse.
Before it goes on the plan
Is Sabal Palm the same as Cabbage Palm?
Usually this name refers to Sabal palmetto, but other Sabal species are sold. Confirm the botanical name, especially when buying young trunkless plants.
Does a ten-foot trunk mean a ten-foot palm?
No. Total height includes the crown and fronds. Ask the supplier to explain every quoted height so the installed size is clear.
Is it storm-proof?
No tree or palm is storm-proof. Cabbage Palm has useful coastal traits, but health, roots, exposure and the particular storm still matter.
Pairing ideas
Dwarf Palmetto: Sabal minor provides fan foliage in the lower garden. A juvenile Cabbage Palm should not be substituted for it.
Pink Muhly Grass: Pink Muhly Grass can provide a finer texture outside the palm’s working area where the site is sunny and well drained.
