Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper

Juniperus procumbens ‘Nana’

Add a low, layered evergreen shape with a little lift.

Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper combines outward-spreading branches with slightly rising tips. It has more visible layering than a very flat juniper carpet and can make a useful low accent in a sunny bed. The small pointed needles give the foliage a crisp texture, especially when there is open space around the plant.

Before you choose: Nana is low, but it is not narrow: expect a plant five to six feet across, with further spreading possible. It can mound over obstacles. The needles are prickly and may irritate skin, so keep branches away from narrow paths and wear gloves when working through the plant.

Size and space

Typical height: 6–12 in. Mature spread: 5–6 ft wide.

NC State describes a typical 6–12 in height and 5–6 ft width. The diagram shows that range’s larger example, not a guaranteed lifetime limit. Mounding, site conditions and age affect the outline. The installed example is a smaller plant, not a claim about container size or growth rate.

Installed example: 4 in high × 12 in wide. This is an illustrative size, not a pot-size or growth-timeline promise.

Full sun · Well-drained soil; water to establish and avoid soggy roots · Blue-green evergreen needles; winter purple tones are possible

Care: Let low branches develop; keep space for inspection and airflow

Where it works around Pensacola

Use this juniper in a sunny Pensacola planting with reliable drainage and enough width for the branch layers to show. It can sit near decorative stone or a low retaining edge if the soil remains suitable. Avoid mixing it into a crowded bed that receives frequent irrigation for plants with wetter needs.

Can it reach its full width?

Measure the clear bed between paths, walls and neighboring plants. A low plant can still block maintenance access as branches extend.

Will the soil stay wet?

Check low points and irrigation runoff. Choose another plant if the root zone cannot drain reliably without correcting the site.

Will people brush against it?

Leave clearance beyond the foliage for walking, play and maintenance. Prickly needles make a generous setback useful even though the plant is short.

Is the form being sold the right one?

Look for Juniperus procumbens Nana. A bonsai-style specimen or a different juniper may have very different training and eventual landscape proportions.

Before it goes on the plan

Is this meant to be kept as bonsai?

No. This guide describes the naturally spreading landscape cultivar planted in the ground. Bonsai requires a separate container and pruning approach.

How does it differ from Blue Rug?

Nana has a more layered, slightly rising branch habit and pointed needles. Blue Rug generally forms a flatter carpet. Both need sun, drainage and several feet of width.

Can I shear it into a small ball?

Its value is the low spreading form. If the space requires a compact ball, choose a plant with that natural habit instead of repeatedly forcing this juniper to fit.

Pairing ideas

Coastal False Rosemary: Coastal False Rosemary adds a taller shape in freely draining sand. Keep both plants open to sun and leave space between their mature outlines.

Little Bluestem: Little Bluestem offers upright stems in a suitable sunny, draining location. Allow separate crown space and maintenance access.
