European Fan Palm

Chamaerops humilis

Make a courtyard focal point with a fuller palm shape.

European Fan Palm, also called Mediterranean Fan Palm, combines short trunks with a dense set of fan-shaped leaves. It can become the main feature of a broad courtyard bed or a planted corner viewed from the house. Its clustered form gives a different effect from a single tall palm.

Before you choose: Sharp teeth line the leaf stalks. Keep the plant away from narrow walking routes, and allow for the whole clump. Published spreads range from 6–10 ft to about 20 ft for larger clumps; a compact nursery plant should not be treated as a permanently narrow accent.

Size and space

Total mature height: 8–15 ft. Mature frond spread: 6–20 ft.

The 8–15 ft total height includes the fronds. UF/IFAS gives a 6–10 ft spread in its garden profile and a 20 ft spread in its broader palm table. The diagram includes the larger clump possibility so the bed can be evaluated before choosing a form.

Installed example: 4 ft high × 4 ft wide. This is an illustrative size, not a pot-size or growth-timeline promise.

Sun to part shade · Well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established · Evergreen fans · curved clustered trunks

Care: Retain a full crown; choose clumping or trained form deliberately

Where it works around Pensacola

Explore this palm for a sunny or partly shaded Pensacola garden where the clump can stand freely. A broad courtyard bed can showcase its trunks without bringing the toothed petioles into the path. Favor shelter from direct salt spray because published salt-tolerance ratings differ.

Is the supplied plant single or multi-trunked?

Choose the form that fits the composition and maintenance plan. A trained single stem and a natural expanding clump are different design decisions.

Can the bed take a wider clump?

Lay out both the immediate plant and the larger possible footprint. Preserve gate, window and utility access beyond the foliage.

Are sharp petioles out of reach?

Place the plant where it can be viewed without brushing through it. More clearance is needed than a tidy photograph may suggest.

How exposed is the site?

Cold tolerance is one advantage, but fronds can still be damaged by a freeze. Treat direct salt exposure separately and ask about local performance.

Before it goes on the plan

Is Mediterranean Fan Palm the same plant?

Yes. European Fan Palm and Mediterranean Fan Palm commonly refer to Chamaerops humilis.

Can it stay in a pot?

It can be grown in a suitable container, but that requires watering, drainage and eventual root-space decisions. The landscape size diagram does not promise a permanent container size.

Should I remove healthy lower fronds?

Keep a full healthy crown. Selective maintenance should support the plant and access needs, not create a severely stripped palm silhouette.

Pairing ideas

Pindo Palm: Pindo Palm has arching feather fronds and a different width and fruit-cleanup requirement.

Katrinus Lomandra: Lomandra can provide a contrasting texture where its own light, soil and space needs fit outside the palm footprint.
