Little Gem Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’

Give the garden a vertical evergreen anchor.

Little Gem brings glossy green leaves, a narrower outline and creamy white flowers to a substantial tree. It can hold a composition together when lower planting changes with the season. Use its upright form deliberately, with enough height above it and enough soil around it for the long-term tree it becomes.

Before you choose: Little Gem is smaller than a standard Southern Magnolia, but it is still a tall tree. The local extension guide allows 30–35 ft of height. Do not place it beneath eaves, overhead wires or in a narrow foundation pocket.

Size and space

Mature height: 30–35 ft. Mature spread: 8–12 ft.

The Santa Rosa County guide lists 30–35 ft high and 8–12 ft wide, which this diagram uses. Some nursery listings are smaller and other growing conditions can produce larger trees. The illustration reserves a natural crown; trimming it does not establish a permanent root boundary.

Installed example: 6 ft high × 3 ft wide. This is an illustrative size, not a pot-size or growth-timeline promise.

Full sun to part shade · Prefer suitable acidic, well-drained soil; water during establishment and monitor dry periods · Evergreen leaves with rusty undersides · fragrant creamy-white flowers in the warmer season

Care: Allow the natural upright crown; keep mulch off the trunk and plan for leaf and flower cleanup

Where it works around Pensacola

Santa Rosa County’s teaching-garden reference provides a useful local size guide. In a Pensacola landscape, place Little Gem where its eventual vertical outline belongs, and where fallen leaves can be maintained comfortably. A freestanding bed may offer more flexibility than a strip pressed against a wall.

Is there enough overhead room?

Look beyond today’s roofline and nursery height. Map wires, roof overhangs and future structures before deciding where the tree’s center should be.

Can the foliage stay low?

Little Gem often carries a dense crown fairly close to the ground. Keep that form if it serves the view; do not assume the tree will naturally provide a clear passage underneath.

Where will leaves and flowers collect?

Compare the location with drains, pool coping and seating. An evergreen tree still sheds material, and the layout should make that routine care manageable.

Is the screen needed immediately?

A small installed tree will not provide a mature screen on day one. Build the composition around an honest starting size and allow a separate plan for present privacy needs.

Before it goes on the plan

Will Little Gem stay below a one-story roof?

Not reliably. It is a smaller magnolia selection, not a permanently short shrub. Use the 30–35 ft local planning height when assessing overhead space.

Is this a native tree?

It is a named cultivar of Southern Magnolia, a species native to Florida. A native-species cultivar is not the same as locally sourced wild seed stock.

Can I use it close to a pool?

Consider the mature crown, root area, leaf and flower drop, access and equipment together. There is no single setback that makes every site suitable; place the tree as part of the whole layout.

Pairing ideas

Shi Shi Gashira Camellia: Shi Shi Gashira can sit beyond the magnolia’s mature crown in a compatible acidic, drained bed. Allow independent spaces and plan for the shade that develops.

Dwarf Mondo Grass: Dwarf Mondo offers a much smaller scale where shade and moisture suit it. Avoid digging a new planting into the established tree’s roots.
