Shi Shi Gashira Camellia

Camellia × hiemalis ‘Shishi Gashira’

Give the quieter season its moment.

Pink flowers and dark, glossy foliage bring a different rhythm to the garden as the weather cools. This spreading camellia can frame a porch or soften a foundation when the layout makes room for its width, not just its height.

Size and space

Mature range: 4–5 ft high × 4–8 ft wide.

LSU references describe roughly 4–5 ft in height, with widths from 4–5 ft to 6–8 ft as plants develop. The diagram reserves the broader end. Often sold with sasanqua camellias, this is the named Shishi Gashira selection, not any small camellia.

Compare with a six-foot person: installed example 2 ft high by 2 ft wide. This example is not a fixed pot size or a growth timeline.

Sun to part shade · Moist, acidic, well-drained soil · Evergreen · pink fall–winter flowers

Where it works around Pensacola

An established Gulf Coast garden choice to explore for sheltered entries and mixed beds. Morning light and relief from harsh afternoon exposure can make placement easier, especially while a new plant establishes.

Have you planned for width?

A short camellia can still become a broad shrub. Leave breathing room at steps, window access and the edge of the walk; a narrow bed can turn a graceful plant into a recurring pruning job.

Does water leave the bed?

Camellias prefer acidic soil that holds useful moisture and drains. Look at roof runoff and low spots before planting. A beautiful front-door location is not suitable if the roots stay soggy.

Where will fallen petals land?

Picture the bloom season from the room or porch where you will enjoy it. Keep the heaviest petal fall in a planting bed where possible, rather than directly over a narrow path or pool edge.

Can you maintain the whole shrub?

Leave access to inspect leaves and remove damaged growth. Camellias can develop tea scale and other problems; a reachable plant is easier to care for than one squeezed between a wall and another hedge.

Before it goes on the plan

Is this a dwarf camellia?

It is compact compared with many camellias, but dwarf does not mean tiny. Use the mature width in the design and ask the nursery to confirm the Shishi Gashira cultivar on the label.

When should it be trimmed?

If shaping is needed, do it after its flowering season. Repeated clipping later can remove developing flower buds. Start with enough room for the natural form so pruning stays selective.

Will it flower all year?

No. Its flowers are a cool-season feature, generally in fall into winter. The glossy evergreen foliage carries the planting through the rest of the year.

Pairing ideas

Florida Anise: Consider Florida anise behind the camellia in a generous, sheltered border. Keep the camellia in the brighter, well-drained part; do not plant both into a wet low spot.

Radicans Gardenia: Explore Radicans gardenia in front where light, acidic soil and drainage suit both. Reserve the camellia’s full width so it does not shade out the smaller layer.
