Pringles Dwarf Podocarpus

Podocarpus macrophyllus ‘Pringles’

Let the green hold everything together.

Fine, narrow leaves and a naturally compact habit make this podocarpus a useful foundation for a layered garden. It brings a calmer evergreen shape beside seasonal flowers, paving and outdoor living areas without relying on a showy bloom.

Size and space

Mature range: 3–5 ft high × 4–6 ft wide.

UF/IFAS describes Pringles at about 3–5 ft tall; grower references list a 4–6 ft spread. Use the broader footprint for planning. Nursery container size and a scaled-down design model do not establish the mature size of the plant being supplied.

Compare with a six-foot person: installed example 1.5 ft high by 1.5 ft wide. This example is not a fixed pot size or a growth timeline.

Sun to part shade · Well-drained soil; water to establish · Evergreen · light green new growth

Where it works around Pensacola

A practical foliage option to explore in Pensacola-area residential beds. The important choice is the actual Pringles dwarf cultivar: ordinary podocarpus can become much larger and should not be substituted into the same space.

Is the nursery plant really Pringles?

Keep the cultivar name in the plant schedule and check the delivered labels. A general podocarpus, a yew-pine rendering object or a clipped larger plant is not automatically an equivalent replacement.

Does the low hedge have enough width?

Decide whether you want a natural mound or a maintained hedge before spacing plants. Leave room to reach walls and equipment. Height alone does not tell you whether a foundation bed is large enough.

Will roof or patio runoff collect here?

Podocarpus needs drainage. Watch the site after rain and avoid a bed that holds water against the roots. Resolve the grade and runoff pattern before using an evergreen hedge to finish the view.

Are you leaving tomorrow’s access open?

Place the mature shrub outside equipment service areas, gates and planned utility routes. A dependable green backdrop should make the outdoor space easier to live with as later project stages are built.

Before it goes on the plan

Is this the same as standard podocarpus?

It is a named dwarf selection. The species and other cultivars can grow far larger. Confirm Pringles rather than relying on a small pot or a recently trimmed shape.

Can I keep it more formal?

It tolerates shaping, but a formal hedge needs an ongoing care plan and access on the sides being maintained. If you prefer less trimming, give the plant room for its natural mound.

Will it quickly fill an empty bed?

Expect a slower-growing plant rather than instant coverage. Buy the actual installation size that suits the project and budget; crowding extra plants into the bed now creates a different problem later.

Pairing ideas

Little Lime Hydrangea: Little Lime hydrangea can add summer flowers near the evergreen structure. Favor a suitable morning-sun position with good drainage, and account for the hydrangea’s watering needs.

Kaleidoscope Abelia: Kaleidoscope abelia adds warmer foliage in a sunnier part of the same design. Group it deliberately, allow both shrubs their mature spread and check that water needs fit the bed.
