Schilling’s Dwarf Yaupon Holly

Ilex vomitoria ‘Schilling’s Dwarf’

A softer edge. With room to spread.

Small leaves and a rounded silhouette bring calm to a busy planting plan. This native yaupon selection works beautifully as a broad green layer, provided “dwarf” does not get mistaken for permanently tiny.

Size and space

Mature range: 4–7 ft high × 6–10 ft wide.

UF/IFAS lists a natural mature range of 4–7 ft high and 6–10 ft wide. The 3 × 5 ft maintained example requires ongoing pruning. A low nursery mound does not represent its lifelong size; leave room for its spreading base.

Compare with a six-foot person: installed example 1.5 ft high by 2 ft wide. This example is not a fixed pot size or a growth timeline.

Sun to part shade · Water to establish; drought tolerant once rooted · Evergreen · male selection without berries

Maintained hedge example: 3 ft high by 5 ft wide. This illustrative size requires ongoing pruning; it is not the natural mature size or a root boundary.

Where it works around Pensacola

A useful Gulf Coast starting point for an evergreen border or repeated planting islands. Match the available bed width to the intended form, then review drainage and direct salt exposure at the property.

Draw the base first

Mark the full mature width on the layout before deciding how many plants fit. Keep that outline outside gate swings, chair space and the route to the pool.

Choose your maintenance level

A natural mound and a clipped hedge have different space needs. Decide which look you want before installation, rather than relying on future pruning to rescue a narrow bed.

Keep sightlines useful

Compare the intended hedge height with windows and the view from a seated position. A planting can look low in an aerial rendering and still block the view you value.

Confirm the nursery label

Ask for Schilling’s Dwarf specifically. It is a male selection without red berries; the larger Pride of Houston guide describes a different form and purpose.

Before it goes on the plan

Can I keep it three feet tall?

A maintained hedge is an option, with a continuing pruning commitment. The comparison shows one possible maintained size, not a growth limit or a guarantee that every location supports that form.

Does it have sharp holly leaves?

Its small leaves lack the prominent sharp spines people often associate with holly. Leave access space anyway so visitors do not need to brush through the planting.

Which yaupon belongs in my design?

Start with the job: a broad lower layer, a tall screen or a tree accent. Choose the named selection and nursery form after the required height and width are clear.

Pairing ideas

American Beautyberry: Use beautyberry in a separate roomy pocket for fall fruit and an informal outline. Keep the evergreen yaupon visible when beautyberry is bare.

Rose Creek Abelia: Consider Rose Creek where light and drainage suit both plants. Lay out two full mature footprints rather than squeezing flowers under the holly.
