Variegated Shell Ginger

Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’

Brighten a generous shaded bed with bold striped leaves.

Variegated Shell Ginger brings broad green-and-yellow leaves to a large upright clump of leafy stems. The irregular striping creates a bright effect without depending on a mass of flowers. It can become a strong focal point beside plain green foliage or a shaded wall, where its large leaves have enough open space to be appreciated individually.

Before you choose: This is a substantial accent, not a small edging plant. In North Florida, freezes can cut stems to the ground before new shoots return from surviving rhizomes. Flowers form on older growth, so repeated stem loss can prevent bloom. Choose it primarily for seasonal foliage and do not rely on it for permanent winter privacy.

Size and space

Typical height: 4–7 ft. Typical spread: 5–8 ft.

UF/IFAS gives ‘Variegata’ a height of 4–7 ft and a spread of 5–8 ft. The measured view reserves the upper reference footprint of an established clump. A plant recovering from cold may be smaller for part of the year, but that is not a reason to squeeze it into a narrow bed. Other ginger cultivars may be quite different.

Installed example: 1.5 ft high × 1.5 ft wide. This is an illustrative size, not a pot-size or growth-timeline promise.

Part shade; protection from harsh exposure · Moist, fertile soil with drainage; check moisture during growing-season dry spells · Bold green-and-yellow foliage; freezes can remove stems and leaves

Care: Remove damaged stems as appropriate; divide or thin an expanding clump with access

Where it works around Pensacola

Use Variegated Shell Ginger in a sheltered Pensacola bed with part shade, moisture and drainage. Think of one generous clump as a focal planting rather than scattering many small pots along a path. Keep a route for cleanup and future division. Plain foliage and open mulch nearby can make the striped leaves easier to read and keep the composition from becoming crowded.

Is the bed wide enough for eight feet of spread?

Check the available space on the plan and on site. The leafy clump needs room beyond the small base seen in a nursery container.

What happens if the stems freeze back?

Keep the winter view acceptable without relying on this plant as a solid screen. Its foliage role is seasonal in a cold-exposed location.

Can moisture reach the whole clump?

Check soil and irrigation as the planting expands. Provide a moist but draining root zone rather than a wet pocket beside a downspout.

Will cleanup and division remain possible?

Leave access behind or beside the clump. A large accent squeezed between a wall and dense shrubs is harder to manage as it broadens.

Before it goes on the plan

Will I get shell-like flowers every year?

Do not count on it locally. Flowers form on older stems, and winter stem loss can remove that flowering wood. The foliage is the main reason to choose it.

Why is the guide much larger than the nursery pot?

The pot contains a young part of a spreading rhizomatous clump. Reserve mature space before planting, even if the initial plant looks modest.

Is this the same as edible ginger?

No. This guide describes an ornamental Alpinia cultivar. Culinary ginger is a different plant; do not treat ornamental nursery stock as a food recommendation.

Pairing ideas

Cast Iron Plant: Cast Iron Plant can occupy a separate shaded position outside the ginger’s full footprint, with moisture matched to each root zone.

Caladium: Caladium provides heart-shaped foliage in suitable part shade. Keep the small seasonal planting accessible and clear of the expanding ginger.

Big Blue Liriope: Big Blue Liriope can provide a lower separate edge in part shade. Leave enough distance for both mature footprints.
